Show Notes for Episode 4 -- Spinning Wheels & Spindles
The wrong way to buy a wheel, or how I got lucky:
How to find the wheel of your dreams:
Wheels I have tried (at least the ones I remember):
- Ashford Joy (my wheel!)
- Lendrum folding wheel (Theresa's wheel!)
- Lendrum Saxony (pictures of Lendrum's here) -- I *love* this wheel!
- Louet -- I think I tried the S75.
- Schacht Matchless -- (Didn't we try this one at the Fold Theresa?)
- Golding Triple Flyer -- OMG!!!! Heavenly. If he made this wheel in a less fussy looking model and a less incredible price I may sell a kidney to get one. (heh.) Theresa spun on it too. See. . .

Spindles
- Toy Wheel Kit
- Golding Ring Spindle -- My favorite heavy spindle!
- Kundert Spindles -- My second favorite spindle.
- Bosworth -- Also makes some nice spindles including a super lightweight cedar spindle.
Try your spindles before you buy them!
Books to get you started:
- Spin It
by Lee Raven
- The Alden Amos Big Book of Handspinning
which Theresa reviewed at Two Friends Collect Books.
- Spinning Designer Yarns
by Diane Varney
Music:
- The Crabs ~ Tumbling Away
- Sarah Dougher ~ Everywhere West

Very informative episode. I love my Ashford traditional, but I'm very intrigued by several of the wheels you mention- particularly the Golding. Although, I'm totally with you on the desire for a less fussy wheel. Maybe if there wasn't so much carving and detailed work, the price would go down a bit?!

Thanks for the comparison information. Your absolutely right about sitting down and trying wheels to determine which wheel fits your spinning style and body type.

Great episode. I bought a Lendrum in February, and I love it. It took a lot of research, asking around, and trying out as many wheels as I could to make the decision, though. This podcast is going to be a great resource for folks buying their first wheel--thank you!!

Great show! I'm hoping to invest in a wheel in the fall (I've only just gotten semi-decent results with a spindle) and I'll definitely be listening to this again when the time comes. Just curious, have you tried any of the majacraft wheels? If you did, what do you think?

Hi Julie. I really enjoyed this episode, it was the best one yet. I have so far resisted the spinning lure, but am beginning to think that will come to an end. I just listened to the episode last night, and already today I was looking at some spindles locally.

Really enjoyed this episode
Started with the Ashford Traditional but personally wouldn't recommend that to a beginner - a bit clunky
Have a Majacraft which is good for hauling around - nice built in handle
But my "ahhh" wheel is the Reeves or Reeves/Schact or whatever - Beautiful and smooth and fits just right

Just found your site while searching for people talking about their Goldings. Thanks for sharing your experiences, I am waiting for mine which will be finished in August 2009! Great podcast, thank you.
